About

The idea for Humans of Havana was simple.  We wanted a photoblog featuring street portraits and interviews based on the eponymous Humans of New York, curated by Brandon Stanton.  We wanted to celebrate Cubans’ greatest achievements, their deepest fears and most trying struggles of the “change generation” that is unbound by age.

After many visits to Cuba, thousands of words published on the Cuba Journal and many hours delving into the island nation’s incredible history, we decided that the Cuban people are Cuba’s riches gifts – and the best way to prize this story out of Cuba was to dedicate a site to Cubans.  Truth is many-sided but an image can communicate this shiny stretch of time for Cuba better than any other medium.  It is better to light the candle than to curse the darkness.
